Shure M44-7 Cartridge Needles…

I needed some new needles for the decks. So I called up Guitar Center to see what their prices were and they quoted $29.99 which was what I found most places carrying the Shure N44-7′s for online. Some places had them for about $25.00 + shipping.  On a hunch I called up Hawthorne Stereo remembering that they sold needles too.  For what ever reason I thought they would have a higher price.  They quoted me $20.00 and I was pretty happy to hear that since they were just right down the road, and the price was less!

Shure N44-7 == $29.99

When I arrived and spoke with the sales associate he brought out a replacement brand which I’m not familiar with.  He mentioned that they are made to the same specifications and that with the $20 price… I figured it is worth a try.  My concern is how they will hold up for scratching and any other way that my needles tend to get abused.  That’s what I hope to find out.

The N44-7′s I was using were pretty beat so it was not much of a surprise when I replaced them with the blank brand that it already improved the sound quality.  Stoked about this and the price.

Median Filter with Processing

Just completed another step with the median filter I’ve been working on.  Now it will process images without making major alterations in the border.  To do this I used “if” statements to process the corner pixels and the border pixels differently than the main portion of the image.  In the last version, the images would begin to close in on themselves as a result of the border pixels not being operated on ( thus leaving them empty ) and then continuing to become a part of subsequent pixel operations.

Both Hands On The Trigger…

From the cover of today’s Seattle Times:

Coffee Trigger

Coffee Trigger

Why the two handed armed and dangerous pose?  It looks like one male and one female hand, and I’m not sure why they would decide to hold a cup of coffee like this.  ( ??? )  And this above the main headline, “Inquest jurors divided on woodcarver’s killing“.

Palm Springs Art Museum – Winter 2010

The Best That You Can Do

The Best That You Can Do

I was fortunate enough to visit the Palm Springs Art Museum while sharing time with family in Southern California.  It was awesome and I took about as many pictures as I could.  At the time, the main exhibition was of the photography by Richard Avedon.  I had never seen his work prior to this and loved it as well.  See many photos below!

Restroom Creativity

This is pretty much just bathroom humor and in some perspectives, straight up vandalism.  I found it interesting ( and it made me laugh ) because of the way people can be creative in adapting something which already exists to create a new or different meaning than the one intended.  This creative aspect of humanity I find subtle and ingenious at times.

Flower – Decomposition

This is an animation based off of stills created using a median filter.  My goal was to approximate the results of the median filter in ToyViewer by utilizing some computer code so the process of saving each still would be automated.  This works, and after adding the data from the alpha values, the results are getting better.  If I now could learn how to operate on the “edge” pixels of the image itself, that may bring some other interesting results.  I’m using Processing to operate recursively and create the stills and then converting the image sequence using QuickTime 7.

DAIM Presentation Slides – PDF

This is a PDF document for the brief presentation given last Friday in the space and video class I’m taking.  All the images of DAIM’s work were used from his website ( daim.org ).  In the slides and presentation I briefly cover the development of style over time as well as the various mediums DAIM has used to create with.  One of the aspects of his work I like best is that in all of the mediums he uses, his style is prevalent through out.  I also compare a selection of works of one contemporary architect / artist, Zaha Hadid, before sharing how this work feels relevant to what I am exploring at this time.

Rock The Bells ( study )

In this sound study I am working to explore how the processes I used this past Summer may be employed using SuperCollider.  This is my midterm for the digital sound synthesis course I’m taking at the University of Washington.

Matthew Lord - Rock The Bells ( study )

Having created the sound of a bell for the previous assignment, this became the original source material from which to extrapolate a new set of sounds from.  I don’t feel like I quite made it to where I would have liked to as far as abstraction goes.  In going through this exercise, one element of my focus was to try and get to the abstraction from the original source material.  I feel like it works though could have more appropriate transitions in many places and could be more focused on the process I was attempting to employ.
